Her condition was at its worst while she was editing Hunting Prince Dracula and drafting Escaping from Houdini. But along with the relentless gore and gross-outs, there's a suspenseful plot, lots of (sometimes accurate) period detail, and a spirited heroine with lots of appeal as she dodges Victorian propriety to pursue her true calling. Her symptoms started surfacing during the Stalking Jack the Ripper tour. Maniscalco was diagnosed with chronic Lyme Disease in January 2017 after collapsing that winter. She then decided to follow her heart and her love of reading to become an author. She switched majors and schools to take courses on Criminal Justice and Science. While in college she contemplated becoming a forensic psychologist. Maniscalco studied Fine Art in New York before transferring to F.I.T. While her grandmother is the cause of her active imagination it is her father that got Maniscalco into forensics. Maniscalco believes it was her grandmother that made her fall in love with reading. Maniscalco was raised to love reading with her parents taking her and her sister Kelli to libraries and bookstores every weekend.
